The Marzocchi Bomber Z1

The Z1 is the fork the Bomber name started with. Marzocchi announced the Bomber range in 1996, and the first parts lists in our archive are model year 1997: the Z1 Bomber with 30 mm stanchions, 100 mm travel, coil springs and open-bath hydraulic cartridges. The Z1 stayed in the range every year until 2007; the seal chart still lists a Z1 Sport for 2009 and 2010.

This page covers the classic Z1 of 1997–2010 only. The Marzocchi Bomber Z1 sold since 2018 is a different, Fox-era fork with other parts and seals.

QR, QR20 and TA in the parts-list names are axle options (quick release, 20 mm through axle), not separate models — a 2002 Z1 Drop-Off QR20 is a 2002 Z1 Drop-Off with a 20 mm axle.

Which seal kit fits my Z1?

The answer depends on the year, not on the name:

  • 1997–1999 (Z1 Bomber, BAM, Alloy, Drop-Off, Dual) and 2000 Z1 CR: 30 mm classic — Seal Kit – 30mm classic (DZ-SK-30C).
  • 2000–2001 Drop-Off, MCR, QR, X-Fly: the parts lists confirm 30 mm but do not show whether the seal is the classic or the m-arch type. Compare your old seal with both kits, or ask us with a photo before ordering.
  • 2002 Z1 Drop-Off, Free Ride and Wedge, and the 2004 Z1 Wedge: 30 mm m-arch — Seal Kit – 30mm m-arch (DZ-SK-30M). This is the kit for a “2002 Bomber rebuild”.
  • 2003–2010 (Drop-Off, Free Ride, FR SL, Light, Sport, SL, RC2, Z150): 32 mm classic — Seal Kit – 32mm classic (DZ-SK-32C).

One open point: Marzocchi’s 2004 Z1 Free Ride technical document is titled “30mm”, while the 2004 parts lists list 32 mm seals. The parts lists lead; check your stanchion diameter if in doubt.

Service notes from Marzocchi documents

All classic Bombers run SAE 7.5 fork oil (Marzocchi 1994–2004 technical manual). Oil per leg, as printed by Marzocchi:

  • 1997 Z1 Bomber: 90 cc per leg, EBH 16 / SAE 7.5, oil level 50 mm below the top of the stanchion, fork fully compressed.
  • 1999 Z1 BAM: 100 cc; Z1 Alloy: 96 cc.
  • 2000 Z1 Drop-Off: 90 cc for 100 mm travel, 95 cc for 130 mm; level 45 mm.
  • 2001 Z1 Drop-Off: 80 / 85 cc per leg; 2002 Z1 Drop-Off: level 65 mm.
  • 2005 Z1 Free Ride 1: right leg 130 cc, left leg 155 cc.

Always check the document for your exact year — volumes changed almost every season.
